Frini was a famous hetaera (courtesan) of antiquity, renowned for her natural beauty. She lived in the 4th century BC in ancient Athens, although she hailed from Thespiae in Boeotia, where she was born around 371 or 365 BC. Her father was named Epicicles and her real name was Mnesarete. However, due to her pale, ashen skin, she became known as Frini, a name derived from the amphibian 'phrynos' (toad). Many well-known historical anecdotes about her life have been preserved, and she is considered to have been the model for the famous statue Aphrodite of Cnidus, a work by Praxiteles. Frini died in Athens in 310 BC.

Arriving in ancient Athens, she began working as an aul\u0113tria (flute-girl\/performer) and very soon acquired fame and wealth, being invited to the most important symposia of her time, which led to her association with many prominent men of the city. She is also known for demanding a very high fee; the comic poet Machon mentions that she required one mina for a single night. It is even said that she herself determined the amount, depending on how she felt about the particular client: if she found him disagreeable, she demanded an exorbitant price. Conversely, she offered herself for free to the philosopher Diogenes of Sinope, because she admired his mind. Another incident is also mentioned in which Frini (Phryne) tried, unsuccessfully, to seduce the philosopher Xenocrates.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
